Sigurd Lewerentz
Born in Sweden, 1885.Received his initial training in mechanical engineering and construction technology at the Chalmer Institute of Technology, Göteborg, after which he began his architectural apprenticeship in Germany. He was active in the Swedish Arts and Crafts Society, the Movement for Home Ownership and the debate concerning burial reform. In 1916, he opened his own office. Also in 1940, he bought a factory and produced fittings for the expanding Stockholm subway system. He is still widely known for his Resurrection Chapel, completed in 1925 at StockholmÕs Woodland Cemetery. He continued to work at competition proposals and furniture designs until shortly before his death on 1975. |
